Our Mission

The mission of the Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Local churches provide the most significant arena through which disciple-making occurs.

What We Believe

1. We are convinced that God has mercy and love for all people.

2. We believe in that there is salvation through Jesus Christ.

3. We believe there is a triune God. There is only one living and true God, everlasting in which there are three persons – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

4. We celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper or Holy Communion. We believe that the Sacraments are the means of grace by which God works invisibly in us, quickening, strengthening and confirming our faith in him.

History

In 1849, friends and neighbors held Sunday morning worship service in the home of Ezekiel and Mary Ann Black, in Western Black Township. On September 17, 1849, Mr. Black donated land for a new church.

In 1936, the members of the flood-destroyed Prairie Church merged with Black’s Chapel.

In 1994, Black’s Chapel grew again with the merger of Zoar UMC.

On January 1, 2009, Black’s Chapel grew once again with the merger of St. John’s UMC.

In July of 2011, the church voted to purchase the existing car dealership building at 1800 W 4th Street in Mount Vernon, Indiana.
